POTTY TRAINING POLICY
Little Crickets Ltd
September 2025

At Little Crickets, we understand that potty training is an exciting milestone for every child. We aim
to make this experience positive, fun, and empowering, supporting children to develop confidence,
independence, and self-care skills.
Aims of the Policy
• To encourage children to gain independence in using the potty.
• To provide a safe, clean, and supportive environment where children feel proud of their
achievements.
• To work closely with parents/carers to ensure consistency between home and nursery
routines.
• To celebrate every success, big or small, boosting children’s self-esteem and confidence.
Our Approach
Communication with Parents/Carers
We encourage open communication between parents/carers and the child’s key person about potty
training. This allows us to work together to determine the right time to start, review progress, and
make adjustments tailored to each child’s needs.
Readiness
• We believe each child is unique and will begin potty training when they are ready.
• Signs of readiness may include showing awareness of when they are wet or soiled, staying
dry for longer periods, showing interest in the potty, or communicating the need to use it.
Positive Encouragement
• Staff provide gentle guidance, praise, and encouragement throughout the process.
• Accidents are a natural part of learning - children are always supported with patience and
encouragement and never made to feel bad.
Potty Training Support and Practical Steps
• Children are encouraged to use the potty regularly, especially at key times such as before
meals, after naps, and during transitions.
• Practitioners observe for signs that a child may need the toilet, such as fidgeting, crossing
their legs, or telling a practitioner they need a wee or poo.
• Staff provide support with clothing, hygiene, and handwashing to help children develop
independence and confidence.
• Every success, no matter how small, is celebrated with praise, stickers, and positive
reinforcement to encourage continued progress.
Managing Accidents
• Accidents are part of learning, and staff respond with patience and encouragement.
• If a child has three accidents in one day, they will wear a nappy or pull-up for the rest of the
day. This is simply a way to keep them comfortable and confident, allowing them to continue
practising and celebrating their potty achievements the next day. Every step is part of the
learning journey, and we celebrate progress, not perfection!
Partnership with Parents/Carers
• We work closely with parents/carers to maintain consistency, sharing strategies and
progress updates.
• Parents/carers are encouraged to let staff know about successes or challenges at home so
We can support their child effectively.
Review
This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if guidance changes, ensuring our approach continues
to be supportive, positive, and child-focused.
